John
John Pemberton is a specialist diabetes dietitian and founder of The Glucose Never Lies®, an independent education platform that translates complex diabetes science into clear, practical guidance. He works at the intersection of physiology, technology, and lived experience, helping people understand their glucose data and use it with confidence. His approach blends modern tools such as Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) with principles that have underpinned human health for millennia: structured eating, meaningful movement, and habits that support metabolic stability. John’s contribution to the ISPAD 2022 Exercise Guidelines included the strategy of using post-meal activity to reduce hyperglycaemia — a simple, evidence-based method now used widely in education. Structured education is central to his work. John designs programmes that make dynamic glucose management more intuitive, including the CGM Academy, which teaches the GAME–SET–MATCH framework for improving time in range and the KISS method for managing high-fat, high-protein meals. These ideas have shaped Birmingham’s pioneering AID structured education programme, which has helped eliminate inequalities in access to diabetes technology and outcomes across diverse communities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, John co-created an award-winning virtual diabetes curriculum for schools, reducing repetitive staff training and freeing time for CGM and AID onboarding. He also serves on the IFCC Working Group for CGM, which is working towards global standardisation of CGM performance testing. His 2023 narrative review highlighted major regulatory gaps in CGM accuracy evaluation, particularly in Europe. John’s commitment is personal as well as professional. After his son tested positive for type 1 diabetes autoantibodies, he developed a dedicated education programme for his family — a reminder of why clarity matters and why data must be turned into real-world understanding.
