For John – Deep Dive

Rather than write a detailed section, I have created some interactive resources.

Before you use the resources, I strongly advise you read this position statement.

Glucose management for exercise using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and intermittently scanned CGM (isCGM) systems in type 1 diabetes

Ok, now you are up to speed, here are the resources.

Making basic exercise plans:

  • If you want a deep dive look at my EXTOD and APS slides – Be warned this goes deep!

  1. I was just diagnosed as prediabetic with an A1C of 5.6. I ride my bike A LOT (5000 miles/year) usually at a fairly high intensity – by myself – 17 mph, with others, often 20+mph. All the guidelines I have found are very generic and essentially ignore the need/use of carbs in activities. It looks like there MIGHT be some sort of formula to keep me “in bounds” . Is there such a thing?? Basically, I am trying to identify how many carbs I can eat if I ride one hour, two hours, etc. I often ride 5 – 7 hours in a day covering 70 – 100+ miles. Thanks!!

    1. Usually the max the GI tract can absorb is 1g per min so 60g per hour which is 240kcal and if cycling hard you will be burning est 500-800kcal per hour so it will provide 50% you needs with the other 50% coming from your stored glucose and fat. Hope that helps.
